Sherman Library & Gardens presents Library Lecture: The Persuasive By of Orange County on Tuesday, May 17 from 2-3 p.chiliad. Bring together Jill Thrasher, Library Managing director, for a closer wait at the Sherman collection of historic brochures, booklets, and pamphlets used to promote the cities of Orange County. For more than 100 years, Orange County cities take worked hard to lure new residents to set downwardly roots in Southern California. Cities created brochures, booklets, pamphlets, and other advertisements that promised rich soil, plentiful water, state-of-the-art roads and rails lines, all set within a perfect climate for both agriculture and leisure. They also offered affordable housing, beautiful beaches, light-green parks, practiced schools, modern libraries, new museums and many other local attractions. Oft, the cities' publicity materials would highlight the ease of travel to the desert, mountains, or beaches. Filled with photographs, maps, and artwork to highlight the cities' greatest qualities, these circulars show Orange Canton's transition from farmlands, to oil fields, to major metropolitan areas. Many of these advertisements have been lost to time. Sherman Library is fortunate to have a robust collection of such items in its archives. Since water, transportation, oil, gas, agriculture, population growth and development are all fundamental themes of Sherman Library's drove, these printed items are an infrequent resource for understanding the Southern California wonderland. Gratis with Garden Admission, but registration is required. Annals at the website. Takes place at Sherman Library & Gardens, 2647 E. Declension Hwy., Corona del Mar. www.thesherman.org
